Little Victories

We tried some brown rice cereal, sweetened with organic cane sugar and it also had unsweetened cocoa.  Then we poured unsweetened coconut milk over it.  He took a few unsure bites, but decided he liked it.  My other 2 kids liked it as well.  We also tried some coconut milk yogurt that he really didn’t like, but I got each kid to at least take 2 bites.  It will definitely take some time to change how they eat, but I’m excited that they have been more willing than I expected them to be.  My oldest was NOT happy that she was having to join her brother in eating differently, but after I explained to her that it was for the best for all of us, she’s actually been quite helpful most of the time with encouraging him to try more.

Food has always been a struggle for our “O”.  We discovered when he was about 12 months old that he has a severe allergy to eggs and peanuts, then lower on the spectrum is tree nuts, corn, and soy.  We are able to eat peanut butter around him, but he has never ingested it.  We’ve always tried to limit how much he eats of the other things, but corn and soy are in nearly every processed food, like crackers and other snacks he loves, so it has always been hard to find him alternative food for in between meals.  He also deals with some texture issues.  Even when it is a food he likes, if it is cooked in a different way (or “wrong” according to O) then he won’t eat it, sometimes he will even gag and throw up.  He used to LOVE blueberries, when he was about 2 and a half we went to the farmers market and he asked to carry the bag of blueberries and he ended up eating nearly the entire bag as we walked around, that’s how much he loved them.  Well, at some point he got a “yuck filled blueberry” and he hasn’t touched them since.  😦  So far we haven’t even been able to convince him to try them again.

Another texture issue for him is the crispy-ness of chicken nuggets.  For example, we generally were at Chick-fil-a every week and he always peeled most of the breading from his chicken so that he could eat it, but give him the grilled chicken and he won’t touch it!  Those are just a couple of the battles we face.  It’s a journey, and ultimately changing his diet is for the best and is going to help him greatly in the long run!

Do you have a child who deals with texture issues?  What are some tips or tricks that you have tried?

Get Back On The Horse

horses

Back in April we went to visit one of my very best friends at her farm.  My children LOVE going there and playing with her children, as well as riding the horses.  It had been quite awhile since they had ridden horses, so I had completely forgotten about O’s horse allergy.  (When he was tested at the allergist, the nurse told me to keep Benadryl on hand when visiting a farm because his reaction was quite severe.)

So he gets on the pony and immediately starts sneezing profusely.  So much that he ends up startling the pony and gets thrown off. (no worries, it’s a short pony and Owen actually landed on his feet!)  He then walks back over to the sandbox and continues to sneeze over and over.  Then I notice that his breathing is getting faster and his face is changing color.  I begin to panic a little realizing that I had no Benadryl with me and no inhaler (not a proud mommy moment).  In my moment of panic I grab my Young Living Lavender Essential Oil.  I rub drops of oil all over his neck and cheeks.  Within minutes his breathing and face start to go back to normal and his sneezing stops.  About 5 minutes later, he is back to normal and ready to get back on the pony!  He was able to ride with no more issues!

Hayfever got me…for a little while

Yesterday I woke up feeling my allergies come at me full force.  Because of the allergy bomb*, I haven’t had really any allergy problems to speak of so far this season.  (which is SO amazing!)  I got up and took my allergy bomb like normal and we headed out to a friends’ farm.  About half way through our drive I wasn’t feeling any relief, so I decided to apply some oils topically because I knew we would be outside all day.  I put lavender on my nose and around my eyes, lemon behind my ears, and applied some breathe again roll-on.  I was able to get some relief from my itchy/ watery eyes, and my head wasn’t feeling so foggy, but I could not get my nose to stop running ALL…DAY…LONG!

By late evening I was SO miserable I was worried I was getting sick.  In the past, my allergies have given me sinus infections quite regularly, and have even turned into summer bronchitis on occasion.  I knew that I did NOT have time for that, so I looked in my handy dandy oily Pocket Reference under “Hayfever”.  I had remembered a friend mentioning to do this if ever the allergy bomb wasn’t helping, so I knew what to look under.  I read through all the suggestions, and found my LEAST favorite oil was to be my saving grace for this terrible situation.

You don’t understand…me and Di-Gize…we don’t get along!  First of all, I can not STAND the smell!  It REEKS of black licorice, and although some of you out there may love the stuff, I do NOT.  Second, every time I have used it when constipated or tummy sick, I have ended up in the bathroom immediately after just 2 or 3 drops.  This suggestion was telling me to take TWO CAPSULES FULL of Di-Gize!  (that’s about 30 drops)

I stood there for a moment, collected myself, and said a prayer…if this was going to help me feel better, well, I was gonna try it no matter what the consequences may be!  (thinking a good visit to the bathroom would be in my near future)

So I did it, I took the 2 capsules full and I waited…and waited…

An hour later I realized I had not ended up in the bathroom, and better than that, ALL my allergy symptoms were GONE!  Yes, GONE! I couldn’t believe it, my “hippy oils” that so many make fun of me for came through again!  Not only was it so HUGE for me to feel better, it also showed me that somehow these awesome essential oils that God designed and gave us just “know what to do”.  Somehow when it needs to get the “sickies” out of me, it sends me to the toilet…and then on the other hand I can take 10 times the amount I usually do,and feel COMPLETELY relieved of my allergies!  SO AMAZING!

So, What’s in Di-Gize?  you say…  It contains 8 different oils to make it a blend and they are: tarragon, ginger, peppermint, juniper, fennel, lemongrass, anise, and patchouli.  I find it so interesting that a blend that is constructed to aid in digestion problems can also help fix my allergy symptoms!

I am SO very thankful I was introduced to Young Living Oils!  If you’d like more info about them, check out my Oils 101 tab or contact me for more information.  I would love to help everyone get these oils in their hands and begin healing and living more naturally!
