Harder than I thought

We are sitting in the waiting room while O is in the back doing his thing at his 3rd day at Brain Balance.   When this began,  I thought this would be the hard part. Traveling 30 minutes to get here,  him receiving his 1 hour program treatment, then the 40 minute drive home (because traffic is worse then).  I really thought this would be the hardest,  then food would be really hard for him too.  Well, he’s thrown me for a loop!   His home program and exercises are a REAL STRUGGLE.  He doesn’t want to do it (correctly), no matter what we say or do.  We try to make it fun,  we set a timer and tell him he only has to work for that amount of time,  then we’ll take a break, we remind him of the Brain Bucks he gets to earn for doing his work, but so far we haven’t discovered what will help him actually do the exercises like he needs to.  I keep reminding myself that we are just in the beginning, and that it takes time for him to really get this,  but it’s hard.   I spend most of the time with him reminding myself not to get frustrated and breathing deeply so I don’t lose control while working on home program.
Hopefully soon we’ll find how to reach him in this area.  He’s actually done well in the other areas of the program, so I’m trying to see the bright side of our situation.

Frustrating Transition

See this awesome sunrise through the clouds? This was an awesome picture God gave me to view this morning on my way to my 6am TRX class. It was breath taking, the picture doesn’t do it justice. I’m thankful I had that peaceful moment this morning because…
I didn’t see this coming. Well, I’m not sure that we were prepared for any of the results we received from Brain Balance for our son (We’ll call him “O”), but we knew there was going to be things he needed help with. Here’s the thing though…as we figure out how we are going to pay for this and get all these ducks in a row this week, I’m SUPER frustrated! This is hard!
Now that we’ve gone over the results, I understand better how his mind works and why he does the things he does. I get it, I have an understanding that I never had before. But guess what? That doesn’t make it any easier. It didn’t give me a magic dose of patience to be able to deal with him and his melt downs. Having the knowledge of all his struggles has helped, but it has me anxious to begin the program so that we will actively be working on these things!
In the mean time, I guess I’ll have to be satisfied with reading the material they gave me, doing some research on my own, and rolling my Stress Away Essential Oil on to continue to calm these frustrations.

Autism, ADHD, OCD…oh MY!

For over a year now my  husband and I have had concerns about our middle son.  There were signs that his development wasn’t running along with other children his age, but many times we would find other things to lay the blame on so that we could stave off reality.  We’d say it was his age, or he was hungry or tired, or the other kid provoked him into an overreaction.  It’s not that we thought he was perfect, we knew something was off, but we honestly didn’t know what to do or who to turn to.  Recently a good friend posted to Facebook that they finally had a diagnosis for her son…Autism.  As scary as it was in the moment for her, she was excited to finally have some answers and direction so that she could help her son to the best of her ability and find him resources to thrive.  This stirred something in me and because she had the courage to share with her friends and family, it gave me the courage to seek treatment for my son.  The very next day our son had a full blown melt down and I looked at my husband and said, “we need help, we can’t wait any longer”.

I still didn’t know where to go or what to do, but I began asking.  I talked to a few people that I knew who I thought could point me in the right direction, and they made some suggestions.  One of those suggestions that stuck out to me was a place called Brain Balance because mutual friends had actually SEEN results, and they use a holistic approach instead of starting with medication.  This was important to me because if we are able to help him without medication, then this was the direction that I wanted to go!

The very next day I went to a Homeschool Conference and low and behold Brain Balance was there.  I talked with one of the directors of a center and during our conversation I became overwhelmed with the feeling of hope…Hope that this could be it, this could be the solution for our son!

That afternoon I listened to a presentation of another Brain Balance director and as she described what it means to have a right brain weakness, it nearly fit my son to a T.  Right brain weakness is where many people with autism, ADHD, OCD, ODD, etc. fall into.  The right side of their brain is weak and needs to be worked and stimulated to help balance out their brain so that the two sides can communicate effectively.  I sat there realizing that he needed more help than I could give him, and I needed to have him assessed so that I could get the correct help for him so that he would be able to thrive!  Right now in our schoolwork it feels like we are just treading water. Although he has had some breakthroughs this school year, he has made zero progress in handwriting and reading.

I spent the next day of that weekend talking with my husband about the possibilities and praying to God that if this was going to help my little boy, that He would help us find a way to make it work.  That Monday I called for an appointment, and we were in for an assessment by Thursday.

On assessment day I was able to have a good friend of ours watch our other two children and my son and I went in for what would be a 3 and 1/2 hour assessment.  It was an exhausting day.  The paperwork was extensive, and he wasn’t happy about having to be there, but I left feeling like it was the first step in the right direction for him!  We scheduled a time the following week to go over his results, and I went through a range of emotions as my husband and I discussed how we could possibly make this happen for him.  Drive time, astronomical cost, a giant change in his diet, and the amount of commitment needed to benefit from Brain Balance are all factors that really have me feeling overwhelmed.  In my next post I’ll begin sharing what’s next in our adventure to help him and continue on this journey of wellness as a family.

Clean the Clutter: Day 2

It was actually a REALLY good thing I challenged myself with cleaning off our piano yesterday because it gave me accountability to actually get it done today!  I almost ran out of time, but I crammed it in right before taking my son to gymnastics.  That’s the best part actually, committing to one small area a day so that I can get things accomplished!

I’m pretty embarrassed about what the top of my piano actually looked like.  It’s just one of those things that is out of the way and I never get to!  I ended up with an entire grocery bag of things I was able to put in the trash, which seemed quite ridiculous to me that I was ultimately storing trash up there, but it’s gone now!  I also made sure that all the things up there that I needed to keep, were actually put away where they needed to be because I want everything to have a place so we don’t end up in the same predicament!

So…here it is!

piano completepianowork1

I know, it was a crazy mess!  But I’m thankful I got it back to where I need it to be.  Plus now I can see my Precious Moments figurines my grandmother got me when I was younger which I’m very thankful to have.  I also have 2 dried roses on there that each were from my grandparents funeral that I have kept as well.

Plus while I was dusting frames off, with my Young Living Thieves cleaner since I use that for EVERYTHING, I enjoyed looking at our wedding photos I have up on the piano.
Our 10 year anniversary is coming up soon!

So, now to figure out what to tackle tomorrow…I’m giving myself 2 options.  Either the refridgerator or the hall closet.  Both are about equal in difficulty!  Until tomorrow my friends…

MISSION: Clear Clutter Outta My House!

So today, after being inspired by a friend’s facebook post about de-cluttering her home, I decided to tackle it myself!  I am giving myself 1 area of my home everyday, and you are going to come along for the journey!  I thought If I took on an entire room, then I would give up quickly and nothing would really have a “forever home” within my home…I’d just be moving junk around.  I have realized that we have been blessed with far many more things than we know what to do with, so now it’s time to pass some things along to bless someone else.

My first assignment I gave myself was our cup cabinet.  It’s been a struggle for awhile now with kids cups that have missing lids or straws, too many mugs, and hap-hazard placement.  I cleared it out today and pitched anything that had missing parts, and then put quite a few sippy cups in the donate bin I have that’s about to take a trip to the Salvation Army.

Check out my handy work!

            Check out my handy work!

What are some areas of your home that need some purging?  With little kids, the top of the piano has become a cluttered mess to keep it out of their little hands.  I think that will be my next assignment.  I’ve been transforming my body and our family’s health and sharing on here about it, so I thought now I would begin transforming our home in to a better living space.

My Top 10 Uses for Tea Tree Oil

There are so many fun and interesting ways that we use Tea Tree Essential oil in our home, that I thought I would share my top 10 list with you!  Tea Tree Oil is one of the best selling essential oils of all time, and is pretty famous for being gentle on your skin.  I find it quite practical and useful, like many other essential oils as well.  Here’s how we use it:

10 Uses for Tea Tree Oil

  1. Give Deodorant an Extra Punch ~ If you make your own homemade deodorant, adding a little Tea Tree oil gives it some extra aweseomeness for your skin!teatreetop10
  2. Support Aging Skin ~ Just give a little dab to yourself where you feel you need some support to assist in beautiful aging skin.
  3. Add to Your Shampoo!  ~ Do you make your own shampoo?  Or go for an all natural sulfate free version?  I love to accelerate mine by adding tea tree oil to it to support a healthy scalp!
  4. Diffuse with Lemon ~ Oh I saw this tip on a blog somewhere to add about 10 drops to any diffuser with Lemon and you have a wonderful purifying scent that is great all year round support!
  5. Add to a Neti Pot ~ A good friend of mine told me to give it a go in my Neti Pot when I was having some congestion issues.  5 drops of Tea Tree with 8 tablespoons neti pot salt that I mixed in a small jar.  Then it was ready for me when needed to add to my Neti Pot as much salts as called for.
  6. Cleanse the Skin ~ I like to dab a little bit of Tea Tree oil on a blemish, the cleansing properties get rid of that unsightly sucker in no time.
  7. Support Healthy Skin ~ Tea Tree goes quite well with coconut oil, especially when tending to sensitive bottoms.
  8. Support the Immune System ~ Diffuse Tea Tree to cleanse and purify the air and support your immune system.
  9. Power Up Your Body Wash ~ Have you ever had a not-so-clean feeling on your skin, even right after a shower?  Add a few drops of Tea Tree to your body wash and WHA-LAH!  It cleanses like nothing else I’ve seen.
  10. Add it to Your Lotion ~ You’ve caught on by now that Tea Tree is GREAT for the skin!  Just one more place to get some extra bang for your buck.

Get past Summer Sniffles

In the past few days my younger 2 children, ages 5 and 2, have been working on fighting some summer bug that’s gotten ahold of them.  The first sign was a fever hit our 2 year old hard and fast and spiked up to 104.  Beoil cabineting an essential oil momma for nearly 2 years now, I went right to my oily cabinet and set out to put something together to assist my son’s immune system in fighting this bug!

The big realization to me that day was… “This used to be so new, scarey, and intimidating!” (using essential oils) “Now it has become second nature to me!”  I just looked through what I had on hand and used the knowledge that I have compiled over the last couple years to blend together something I knew would assist his little body in overcoming whatever was trying to take him down.  My kiddos love the oils.  I think they truly know that they help them!  Using these oils, getting some rest, and being sure they are drinking water is really helping them through!  Plus, it’s building their immune systems to have the ability to be stronger.

Mommy's "all better" oil                          "all better" oil

I just put some drops of each oil in the re-used lavender bottle that I covered with colorful tape, then add carrier to dilute it for my kiddos.  There’s a picture of my  youngest showing you his “all better” oil.  🙂

DIY Shower Stones

I guess I’ve been on a DIY kick lately, but I really just want to show all of you how easy it is to incorporate Essential Oils into your life and reap all the benefits from their therapeutic qualities!

Today I want to share with you these EASY and CHEAP shower stones.  ANYONE can make these, even people who don’t like to DIY!

Simple Shower Stones

These cute little things have quite a few uses in our home!

  • We use them with 1-2 drops of purification and throw them in the washer to help with mildewed towels or clothes, totally takes the stink right out.
  • I put 2-3 drops of jade lemon on it and place it in the bottom of the shower for an awakening aroma.
  • I have one in a decorative sachet with 2 drops of lavender in my lingerie drawer too!
  • 10 drops Citrus Fresh on one placed in your car makes a great air freshener.
  • For stuffy sinuses place a few drops of Eucalyptus and Lavender on it, and place on the floor of a hot shower, inhale deeply and enjoy some relief!

Now, I bet you’re wondering how to make these!

  1. Mix 1 box of baking soda and a ½ cup of water in a bowl with a whisk.
  2. Scoop out small amounts and place in a silicon baking mold filling about 2/3rds of the way full.
  3. Bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. (or until moisture has baked out)
  4. Allow them to cool completely before unmolding.
  5. Store in an airtight container until ready to use!

Simple, easy, and CHEAP!

This stuff is AMAZING!!!

So…we had a few housekeeping issues today that I was able to take care of with a few drops of Young Living Lemon Oil.  This is an AWESOME way to take care of things in your home without having to use toxic cleaners and chemicals.  Plus it’s easy!  And everyone likes easy, right?

My littlest had gotten ahold of my middle child’s dry erase workbook and had scribbled all over every page!  I don’t know when he did this, but it was long enough ago that it wouldn’t wipe off.  I even tried a wet paper towel and it made no difference.  Then I added 1 drop of lemon oil and it totally came clean with very little elbow grease of my own added!  I just wiped it down again with a clean paper towel and WHA-LAH!  Ready to be used again!

dry erase marker

Then there was this foam sticker, stuck on the floor for ages.  (Well about mother’s day I think)  It was a foam heart sticker that somehow didn’t stick to my child’s project, but was practically glued onto my kitchen floor!  I just dropped a couple drops of lemon oil, let it sit for a minute and scrubbed it off!  All gone and I didn’t have to use any of those chemical cleaners!

My Support

This video was shared by a friend on Facebook and I fell in love with it.

These girls are AMAZING

It really got me thinking about relationships and how blessed I am by a wonderfully supportive husband.  I truly feel incomplete without him and miss him even more when life gets crazy.  Like right now I feel we only see each other in passing and handing the kids over from one parent to the other.  We are both busy, and trying to take time for just us is sparse.  BUT we are going on a Family Date Night tonight in honor of Valentine’s Day, and I know that will be fun.  He is my rock and my support, and I couldn’t do this life without him.  I know the Lord had His hand in making our paths cross at just the right time in life, and I’m so thankful for my husband.

I also thought about the awesome friendships and church family I have, as well as my own family.  Through all the recent hard times with the changes in our family at home, they have been there.  They have lifted me up, helped me out, and spoken many words of reassurance that have helped heal my hurt heart.  I was able to release the burden unto the Lord knowing full well that He was holding me in the palm of His hand with the kindness and support of all those around me.  Taking more time in prayer and study has helped a lot too.  When you make God a priority, it’s amazing the blessings He unfolds unto you.
